Harvester ants - Payson

Harvester Ants in Payson, AZ

Harvester ants are one of the largest species of ants found in Arizona. These ants are known as harvesters because they harvest grass seeds as their primary source of food. Harvester ants store the collected seeds in the complex tunnel networks of their nests, which extend above the ground as large mounds of dirt. Around their nests, harvester ants tend to clear-cut all vegetation in a radius of several feet, which can result in extensive damage to your lawn.

Harvester ants can grow from ¼” to ½” long and their color may vary depending on their environment, ranging from bright red to dark brown. Though they live in very large colonies, harvester ants only have a single queen, who can live for well over a decade.

Problems with Harvester Ants

Unlike some nuisance ant species in Payson, harvester ants rarely invade local homes; however, these large ants can be a major problem in your yard. Beyond their destructiveness to grass surrounding their nests, harvester ants can also be harmful to people and pets. These ants are very aggressive and will attack any perceived threat to their nest with a venomous sting. Harvester ant stings are quite painful to endure, especially if you’re stung by multiple ants.

Harvester ants are an active problem throughout most of the year in Arizona, though they enter a dormant period during the winter months. From June through October, harvester ant colonies are actively building nests and gathering grass seeds, which can lead to them invading your yard and making trouble for you.
