Odorous House Ants - Payson

Odorous House Ants in Payson, AZ

Of the many ant species that invade homes in Arizona, odorous house ants are some of the most common. You may be tempted to stomp on these ants if you see a bunch of them marching into your kitchen, but be warned: the reason they’re known as “odorous” house ants is that they give a strong stench when crushed. This odor is often compared to rotting coconut.

Some of the smaller ants that invade Payson homes, odorous house ants range from 1/16″ to â…›” in size, and may appear either brown or black in color. Odorous house ants live in large colonies of up to 10,000 ants, with multiple breeding queens. Female ants of this species can survive for several years, while males will die within days of reaching maturity.

Problems with Odorous House Ants

Unlike some common ant species in Payson, odorous house ants don’t sting and they don’t tend to be a major health hazard. However, they can be a major nuisance, with whole armies of these small ants marching into your house at a time. Odorous house ant infestations often occur when the ants are driven inside by rainstorms. They may also begin to rely on your kitchen for food, leading to regular invasions. Odorous house ants can contaminate your food with harmful bacteria like E. coli and salmonella.

Odorous house ants are dormant during the winter in Arizona, but are active throughout the rest of the year, with infestations being most common in July through September. Outside your home, odorous house ants will nest beneath stone, pavers, and wood piles. Within your home, these ants often live inside of wall voids and beneath floors.
